From Chronometric to Experience-based Seasonality: A landscape strategy for re-orientating the urban time geography of Hong Kong
In modern society, the perception of time can be divided into two categories: clock-based or chronometric perception and experience-based perception. Chronometric perception is a way of perceiving time based on "Greenwich Mean Time" as the standard absolute time, which became mainstream with the popularization of mechanical clocks. On the other hand, experience-based perception is a subjective judgment and was the primary way of perceiving time before entering the industrial society, influenced by the seasonal cycles of agriculture.
In modern cities, due to the distance from agricultural activities and the homogeneity of the urban landscape, people's seasonal experience is reduced. Coupled with the fact that absolute time is inherently a part of modernity, chronometric perception gradually dominates urban life. This tendency frees human life from dependence on natural cycles, but it also overlooks the importance of natural rhythms and bodily functions for sustainable development.
This thesis project approaches the urban landscape as a medium to mediate the frictions between these two types of time perception. Specifically focusing on the urban landscape of Hong Kong, this project first explores why and how the temporal characteristics of Hong Kong's urban landscape has changed since the mid-19th century. Based on the findings, it then employs a set of design interventions to reorient the temporal geography of Hong Kong and create an urban landscape that emphasizes the temporal experience of its citizens. The goal is to raise public awareness of the natural rhythm and foster a deeper connection with the environment.
